Warner Bros. Pictures amped up the gore in “The Nun II” after prerelease test screenings indicated audiences wanted more mayhem, in a departure from the first “Nun” flick, which emphasized suspense.
The R-rated “Nun II” rolled up a healthy $32.6 million in domestic boxoffice Sept. 8-10 at 3,728 theaters. The horror genre-flick ranking No. 1 In weekend boxoffice and easily surpassing all competition. Domestic is the U.S. and Canada.
Director Michael Chaves revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that in test-audience reactions “people wanted more violence. There was already a good degree of violence and gore in the movie, but people wanted more of it. So, we did a little bit of additional photography and we ramped that up.”
Chaves said the original “Nun II” version played to test audiences already had more-than-normal “The Conjuring” gore. The film is categorized as in the “horror, mystery, thriller” genres. Set in France, “Nun II” recounts a nun beating back a demonic force.
The original 2018 “Nun” rolled up $117.5 million in domestic boxoffice and $365 million worldwide. It is part of the “Conjuring” horror film franchise, which sports suspense and relatively modest gore. “The Nun II” is the ninth movie in the “Conjuring” universe.
The 2018 version is directed by Corin Hardy and reportedly cost $22 million to make. The current “Nun II” is doing well, though lagging the trajectory of its predecessor.
