The James Bond spy-thriller property and its most famous Agent 007, Sean Connery, anchor a mechanical pinball machine in limited quantities. Chicago-based Stern Pinball launches its James Bond 007 series of hardware priced at three tiers for $6,999 to $12,999.
“Stern’s James Bond 007 cornerstone pinball machine,” says a press release, “highlights film footage and iconic music from the films that built the 007 legend: ‘Dr. No’ (1962), ‘From Russia With Love’ (1963), ‘Goldfinger’ (1964), ‘Thunderball’ (1965), ‘You Only Live Twice’ (1967) and ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ (1971).”
The pinball machines incorporate Stern’s Insider Connected system that enables players to interact a global network of users. So, the machines are thoroughly modern with Internet connections while being traditional mechanical, tactile recreation equipment.
These are full-size pinball machines suitable for retail arcades, but are expected to be purchased by home enthusiasts and collectors. The commercial arcades increasingly employ video devices, though these businesses will often sprinkle in some traditional mechanical pinball machines.
Stern spent a year developing its James Bond 007 series of machines, and expects to launch a bigger assortment in the years to come, including a big tie-in to the 007 movie franchise’s 60th anniversary in 2023.
The pinball machine required licensing intellectual property from James Bond movie producer EON Productions/Danjaq, film company MGM Studios and Aston Martin for reproducing its sports car.
“We created a pinball adventure capturing the suspense, action and humor from this beloved film series,” Gary Stern, chairman and CEO, says in the press release.
There were two other 007 pinball machines decades ago: one based on “Moonraker” in the 1980s and the other connected to “GoldenEye” in the 1990s. The 007 property has also been licensed to Scientific Games for slot machine used for gambling in betting environments.
Other recent Stern Pinball titles include Rush Godzilla, The Mandalorian, Led Zeppelin, Avengers: Infinity Quest, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Stranger Things, Elvira’s House of Horrors, Jurassic Park, Black Knight: Sword of Rage, The Munsters, the Beatles, Deadpool, Iron Maiden, Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars, Aerosmith, Ghostbusters, KISS, Metallica, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Star Trek, AC/DC, Batman and Spider-Man.
