The fanboy-oriented movie “Suicide Squad” spawns a soundtrack music album with edgy music that is emerging as a hit.
Warner Music Group’s Atlantic Records reports its movie soundtrack is the top-ranked album seller in its first week with 167,000 album units sold in the U.S. and is number one in 63 iTunes countries.
“It has already set the record for the most streams ever by a soundtrack album in its first week with nearly 30 million — topping the previous record holder ‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ which notched 11.4 million,” says a New York Post story by Claire Atkinson. “Atlantic dribbled out some songs from soundtrack in advance of the film’s debut before releasing the full album the same day the movie hit theaters, according to Kevin Weaver, president of film and TV at Atlantic Records.”
Tunes include “Heathens” by Twenty One Pilots, “Sucker For Pain” by Lil Wayne, and also rock classics like “House of the Rising Son” by the Animals.
Atlantic Records also had a hit with the “Furious 7” soundtrack last year for the Universal Pictures release.
Warner Bros. Pictures has rolled up $192 million in domestic box office in just eight days of release for “Suicide Squad,” which is hit-level in ticket revenue though the PG-13 rated movie has mixed reviews from critics and audiences. Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Records are separate companies, though had been under one corporate umbrella years ago.
