Walt Disney Studios penciled in “Captain American 3” on May 6, 2016, setting up a faceoff with an untitled Superman-and-Batman movie already scheduled on that date by Warner Bros.
“A lot can happen with jockeying dates,” writes Deadline.com, “especially this far out on the schedule. But it does seem as though Disney/Marvel is drawing a line in the sand against its DC Comics rival as the studios jostle for positioning for their superhero franchises.”
Such head butts by major films are rare. Marvel Comics adaptations have far surpassed movies from DC Comics, which is a sister company of Warner Bros. Walt Disney bought Marvel for $4 billion in 2009.
Notes a Bloomberg News Service story: “Disney also has scheduled Alice in Wonderland 2 for the U.S. Memorial Day weekend in late May 2016, when Fox is set to release a new X-Men film.”
What is the second of a series, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” opened April 4-6 with $95 million domestically, which was a weekend record for April. Superman reboot “Man of Steel” took in $291 million from its domestic theatrical run in 2013.
Post Script: “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” vacated the crowded domestic release date in May cited previously, moving to March 25, 2016.
