Walmart and Esurance are mounting intriguing ticket-distribution promotional tie-ins to two big-budget summer movies: Warner Bros. “Man of Steel” and Paramount’s “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
Walmart is the sole seller of special sneak preview tickets for the Superman movie franchise reboot “Man of Steel.” Meanwhile, automobile insurance company Esurance is distributing 30,000 free tickets for “Star Trek Into Darkness,” which Paramount Pictures is scheduled to premiere May 17.
Regarding Walmart and “Man of Steel”, “the partnership, which the companies said was the first of its kind, will provide the Time Warner Inc. studio with free advertising at more than 3,700 Walmart stores,” says a Wall Street Journal article by Ben Fritz.
Tickets go on sale at Walmart stores on May 8 for advance screenings June 13, which is one day before movie’s general premiere in theaters. Walmart customers buying tickets early get a coupon code to pre-order the DVD/Blu-ray that includes a free digital comic book and other special content. Walmart also pitches movie-themed merchandise. Consumers are directed to the movie’s Facebook page and Twitter feed, and there’s a mobile app for download.
“The retailer won’t take a cut of the box-office revenue, said Brent Duwe, Walmart’s director of entertainment-property merchandising,” according to the WSJ article. The separate press release quotes Laura Phillips, senior vice president of entertainment at Walmart U.S., Warner’s president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman and the film’s director Zack Snyder.
As for the separate “Star Trek” ticket promotion, an Esurance press release says, “Esurance will give away 500 pairs of tickets every day through May 19. ‘Star Trek’ fans can go to the Esurance Facebook page, ‘like’ Esurance, and then simply enter their name, email address, and ZIP Code for a chance to win two tickets to see ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’ Winners of the movie tickets will receive instant notification with a special code to redeem their tickets, which are good for one regular or 3-D viewing of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’ Those who don’t instantly win are encouraged to enter every day for their chance at two tickets.”
Esurance is supporting the promotion with a comedic TV commercial that is created by a division of Bad Robot, which is the company of the film’s director J. J. Abrams.
