Movie poster creator Drew Struzan, who is famous for iconic materials ranging from “Back to the Future” to “Star Wars,” gets the star treatment in a new documentary. “Drew: The Man Behind the Poster” is receiving a limited theatrical release this summer via distributor Kino Lorber. The PG-rated movie runs 94 minutes.
“While this overly group-huggy docu’s theatrical life seems awfully limited,” writes Variety reviewer Peter Debruge, DVD “discs of the limited release could become as collectible as the maestro’s work.” The “Variety” reviewer compares the movie poster maven to Normal Rockwell, in a nod to the famed magazine illustrator famous for Americana scenes. Struzan’s posters were acclaimed for hand drawing, often pulling together multiple images.
The documentary “Drew: The Man Behind the Poster” presents comments by Hollywood talent Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford. Online fanboy guru Harry Knowles also provides commentaries. Before he became a go-to guy for films, Struzan also illustrated rock music album covers for Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper.
“Some directors, like genre-friendly auteur Guillermo Del Toro, will hire him to make posters despite knowing a film’s distributor will never use them,” writes Hollywood Reporter reviewer John DeFore.
As a film poster guru, Struzan was partnered for many years with Tony Seineger, another movie promotion legend who is quoted in the book “Marketing to Moviegoers.”
