Today’s another milestone in digital media history. Facebook launched its first video advertising inserted in its news feed, and the inaugural advertiser is the movie “Divergent.” Lionsgate/Summit will premiere the not-yet-rated action adventure film March 21, 2014.
“Facebook is calling this first campaign for ‘Divergent’ a test, but it’s clear from the pitch that at least part of the experiment is to see if they can present it as an alternative to TV,” says an Advertising Age article by Michael Learmonth.
“Once finished, Facebook will present a ‘carousel of two additional videos … making it easy to continue to discover content from the same marketers.’ ”
“This format isn’t intended for every video ad or page post video on Facebook,” says a Facebook blog post. “We’ll continue to refine this new way for brands to tell stories on Facebook to ensure the best experience for people and marketers.”
