Conviction for Fake Vintage Movie Posters

April 11, 2012 by Robert Marich Leave a Comment

The color poster for “The Brain Eaters” is catchy, but the 1958 movie is B&W.

Vintage movie posters are a big business and there are pockets of fraud for posters and lobby cards. A Georgia man who was an active collector and seller was convicted in federal court to 6 ½ years in prison for manufacturing replicas of posters from famous old movies and selling them as original.

The convicted man Kerry Haggard “worked his scam by paying a New York City printing company to make high-quality ink-jet copies of horror-movie posters of such classics as ‘The Mummy’ and ‘Frankenstein,’ ” says an article in the New York Post by Josh Saul.

“The 47-year-old would then sell the fakes to trusting collectors via such sites as eBay for prices ranging from $500 to $5,000.”

For example, a Scarsdale, N.Y. comic book shop bought three fakes for $20,000.
