Movie theaters are rolling out a range of special promotions to try to ingrain the cinema-going habit with showings of older films at discount prices.
* Carmike and Regal starts a “Marvel Superhero Movie Marathon” screening movies with Marvel characters simultaneously on May 3 coming just before the premiere of “The Avengers” from Walt Disney Studios the following day.
* The Los Angeles Times mounts the Hero Complex Film Festival with super-hero films at a local Regal Cinema theater.
* Cinemark, which operates 5,152 screens in North and South America, programs a 10-week Summer Movie Clubhouse offering G and PG kids movies for $1. Cinemark theaters include the Century Theatres circuit.
* “Alvin and The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” played for two days in March as a fundraiser for the Will Rogers Institute. Tickets were reduced to $5.
* Regal Cinema rolls its Summer Movie Express offering G and PG rated family movies at 282 of its Regal, United Artists and Edwards theaters.
