7-Eleven Rides ‘Cowboys & Aliens’

July 11, 2011 by Robert Marich Leave a Comment

Sci-fi extravaganza “Cowboys & Aliens” has a tie-in with 7-Eleven convenience stores arranged by Universal Pictures, which is scheduled to premiere the PG-13-rated film July 29. The DreamWorks production stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, whose likenesses appear on 7-Eleven beverage cups.

“Cowboys & Aliens” stars appear on millions of 7-Eleven Slurpee cups.

“The new Wrist Blaster cup filled with an Alienade Slurpee beverage is modeled after the mysterious, glowing shackle that encircles the hero’s wrist in the movie,” writes Tanya Irwin for Media Post. “The cup emanates a blue backlight with the flip of a switch. Retailing for $6.99, the collectible cup includes the first Slurpee fill-up.”

Says a 7-Eleven press release: “The 7-Eleven July promotion is supported by radio advertising in Los Angeles, Calif.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Orlando, Fla.; and Norfolk, Va., as well as billboards in Richmond, Va.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Tampa, Fla., and San Diego, Calif. The promotional campaign also will be supported online and through social media.”

“Cowboys & Aliens” is produced by Steven Spielberg, who also oversaw Paramount’s “Super 8” that had a 7-Eleven tie-in, notes Media Post. The “Cowboys” tie-in was worked up via FreshWorks, which is an Omnicom marketing services agency consortium that has 7-Eleven among its clients. 7-Eleven has 8,400 stores in North America.
