Brad Pitt-produced “Lost City of Z” was rejected in its appeal of a R-rating for “brief violence” in the period drama that is scheduled to premiere in theaters April 21. The movie comes from Amazon Studios and its distributor is Bleecker Street.
With the Restricted rating, persons under age 17 must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian. Presumably, the movie was angling for a softer PG-13 rating.
The Classification And Rating Administration (CARA) issues audience appropriateness ratings on the familiar five-point scale ranging from G-general to NC-no children. The industry-run CARA is nominally independent though run under the joint auspices of the major movie studio and movie theater trade groups. Initial ratings can be appealed, but “Lost City of Z” was rejected.
“The movie made its world premiere last fall at the New York Film Festival and is based on David Grann’s 2009 best-selling book,” Pamela McCllintock wrote in a Hollywood Reporter story.
