Verizon Boards 'Pirates' for Exclusive Phone App

May 2, 2011- Walt Disney did an exclusive cell phone content deal with Verizon Wireless for the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise, which is scheduled to premiere May 20 from Walt Disney Studios.

“The new Pirate Discovery App includes character stills, character bios and movie artwork alongside tools to browse local showtimes, find nearby theater locations and purchase tickets,” says a Fierce Wireless article by Jason Ankeny. “Verizon subscribers can also share pirate-themed experiences via Facebook and Twitter, collecting virtual rewards for exploring and disseminating information about the film.”

There’s a website dedicated to the Verizon promo (playing off the nautical theme) for users of Verizon cell phones. “The Pirate Discovery App connects fans to the movie franchise in new ways and lets them go deep into Captain Jack Sparrow’s world,” Suzy Deering, executive director of media and sponsorships at Verizon Wireless, says in a press release, which also quotes Don Gross, vice president, global promotions, Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Marketing. Captain Sparrow is the character portrayed by Johnny Depp.

“The Pirate Discovery App will also introduce a built-in rewards program that enables fans to unlock exclusive film-related content and merchandise by exploring and sharing information and content from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” says the press release. “This rewards program will allow customers to access new video discovery and search technology from VideoSurf by simply pointing their mobile devices at a TV or computer screen to identify Verizon television and designated Web videos from the film to earn rewards that can be redeemed through the app.”
