Kinky Products Hail 'Bruno' Placements

By Robert Marich

July 16, 2009 – These are movie-related items you won’t be seeing at your local Burger King or McDonald’s!
At least two marketers of erotic products tout their product-placement association with Bruno, the R-rated movie that opened July 10-12 to a solid $30.6 million in domestic weekend boxoffice.
According to a press release for Syren Couture Latex: “Sacha Baron Cohen’s character and his gay partner in the movie Bruno wear Syren Couture Latex, outfits that were specially created by Jeffrey Gent, head designer for the world’s leading latex fashion house. Working closely with Cohen and Jason Alper, costume designer for Bruno, Gent produced two hilarious outfits that are featured in an over-the-top gay fetish scene.”
The New York Times published a photo of the lead Bruno character in skintight purple metallic latex shorts suit from the company (see photo below).
In what appears to be lesser product placement, erotic mail order house StockRoom.com says in its separate press release: “In a hilarious scene in the movie, Baron Cohen’s character Bruno and his boyfriend wake up to find themselves locked together in bondage gear in a hotel room and need to ask the staff for assistance. Viewers will see them wearing Stockroom’s ‘How May I Help You?’ Gag with Toilet Brush Attachment along with Thigh Cuffs.”
Syren’s Jeffrey Gent is quoted, “It is not everyday that I’m asked to make something that is deliberately tacky and over the top!" Syren says that its costume creations have been used in Batman Returns, The Matrix, Watchmen, Catwoman, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Men in Black.
