IMDb Ranks Stars By Web Activity

late add Dec 29-Quigley Publishing's star performers

Dec 22, 2012-Movie information website IMDb says the stars of The Dark Knight Rises top its list of on-screen talent with most web buzz in 2012: Tom Hardy ranks #1, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is #4 and Christian Bale is #5.
The website says in a press release, “Rather than base its annual rankings on the reviews of critics or box office performance, these definitive top 10 lists are determined by the actual page views of the more than 160 million monthly unique users of IMDb.”
Looking beyond that bit of hyperbole, the IMDb list of star power is of interest because its metric is web activity, which marches to a different beat than the broad consumer market. For instance, Johnny Depp ranks #7, George Clooney #14, Liam Neeson #16—and they are bigger stars than the Dark Knight trio.
However, youth market fav Jennifer Lawrence ranks #2 and she’s near the top of any list. The youth audience is big online so it makes sense that young Hollywood stars get more lift on a website list.
The IMDB PR also says, “People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, Channing Tatum, leapt up 79 spots from #85 to #6, becoming the fastest climber of the year. “ Hey, it doesn’t get any better than that for validation!
The IMDb package includes favorite lists of various dignitaries, but when I tried some of those pages there were no lists….just info on the dignitary.
LATE ADD: Quigley Publishing's 81st anual poll of motion picture exhibitors on Dec. 28 named Denzel Washington as the top money-making draw at the box office for 2012. In places two through five are Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackson, Mark Wahlberg and Johnny Depp.
