Fandango Talks Up Buzz Metric

By Robert Marich
March 8, 2013-Movie ticketing service Fandango has launched a “movie buzz indicator” that measures fan activity online for films in or about to go into release. The “Fanticipation” indicator seems a consumer marketing effort, according to info in a Fandango press release.
Fandango’s online video series “Weekend Ticket,” which is hosted by Dave Karger, will present data about fan buzz from the Fanticipation survey.
A press release says that Fanticipation is “a first-of-its-kind tool to measure moviegoer excitement and help predict the films that will connect with fans at the weekend box office.  Released weekly, Fanticipation ranks fan excitement around upcoming and current movies based on Fandango's proprietary data collected from its online and mobile traffic, the social media engagement of its fans, and its advance ticket sales.”
The movie industry has four movie tracking services from audience research companies, so it’s not clear what is a “first” about Fanticipation.
Fandango, which is owned by Comcast Corp.’s NBC Universal, sells tickets online for 20,000 U.S. movie theaters, which is about half of the nation’s screens.
