December Film Crunch from Awards Push

Nov. 30, 2017-December overflows this year with movie releases, including many aimed at qualifying for year-end awards, according to Variety. Some 32 films are set to open in 31 days, up sharply from 24 a year ago.
“The awards factor became a problem starting in 2004, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences moved the ceremony
a month earlier” says the article by Variety's Tim Gray. The giant of the awards season is, of course, the Oscars that are now held in late February or very early March. “When the Oscars were held in late March or early April, voters had plenty of time to view all the films in contention, even year-end debuts.”
Not all the December releases are awards-bait prestige films. For example, Walt Disney Studio premieres Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Dec 15 that will be a wide release squeezing theater screen capacity.
